The incident occurred as Marine One was traveling from the White House to Joint Base Andrews. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), a communication lapse between Air Traffic Control (ATC) and the pilots led to a dangerous decrease in separation distance between the two aircraft near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
